He serves as the Principal of the institution and has long been associated with its academic and intellectual life as a scholar of Vedānta and traditional Indian philosophy. A devoted disciple of Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath Dev, Dr. Chakrabarti's life and scholarship reflect a deep synthesis of traditional spiritual learning and modern academic research.

Dr. Loknath Chakrabarti is an eminent Sanskrit scholar, philosopher, and academic administrator who serves as the Principal of The Sanskrit College and University in Kolkata. Early Life and Education

Academic Formation and Scholarship

Dr. Chakrabarti's intellectual formation began within the traditional guru–śiṣya paramparā (teacher–disciple tradition), where he studied Vedic literature and Sanskrit grammar in his youth. He later joined the traditional TOL (Tol) system at the then Government Sanskrit College in Kolkata, receiving rigorous training in classical Sanskrit learning. During this period, he studied under renowned scholars such as Harinarayan Vedatirtha and other eminent traditional teachers.

He subsequently pursued higher studies in Indian philosophy and classical learning through institutions such as the Asiatic Society. He earned the degree of Śāstrī in Navya-Nyāya and later obtained Ācārya in Advaita Vedānta with First Class. Demonstrating exceptional academic ability, he stood first in the M.A. examination of the University of Burdwan and was awarded a Gold Medal, along with several prestigious scholarships and medals, including the Satyacharan Maitra Medal and the H. H. Sankaracharya Swami Swanandashram Scholarship.

In 1997 he received his Ph.D. in Sanskrit from the University of Burdwan for his thesis titled Astikadarśaneṣu Dharmasvarūpa-Samīkṣaṇam, which examines the concept of dharma across orthodox schools of Indian philosophy.

Dr. Chakrabarti received rigorous training in traditional Sanskrit learning through the guru–śiṣya paramparā, studying disciplines such as Vedānta, Nyāya, and classical Sanskrit texts. He later pursued formal higher education in Sanskrit and Indian philosophy, developing expertise particularly in Advaita Vedānta and the philosophical traditions of the orthodox (āstika) schools of Indian thought.

Over the course of his academic career, he has been actively involved in teaching, research, and institutional leadership. As Principal of The Sanskrit College and University, he has contributed significantly to the preservation and advancement of Sanskrit studies and traditional Indian knowledge systems while encouraging engagement with contemporary scholarship.

He has served as Associate Professor of Vedānta and Head of the Department of Sanskrit at The Sanskrit College and University. Over the years he has also been associated with major academic institutions including Rabindra Bharati University and the University of Calcutta, contributing to teaching, research, and the promotion of classical Indian knowledge systems.

His scholarship is rooted in traditional śāstric learning while engaging with contemporary academic discourse. He has delivered numerous invited lectures and participated in seminars devoted to Indian philosophy, Sanskrit literature, and the preservation of traditional knowledge systems.
